“Egypt Court Denies Release of Ailing Rights Lawyer Huda Abdel Moneim Despite Critical Health Condition”

Despite attending her trial while lying on a medical bed inside an ambulance due to the severe deterioration of her health, the Second Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court for Terrorism Cases rejected the release requests for human rights lawyer Huda Abdel Moneim, a former member of Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights. The court ruled to continue her detention and postponed the hearing of a second case in which she is charged with joining and funding an unlawful organization to July 14.

Khaled Badawy, lawyer and husband of Huda Abdel Moneim, stated that the request for her release was based on her critical health condition, as well as the fact that her legal position is similar to that of other defendants previously released in the same case, including Ola Al-Qaradawi and others. He emphasized that his client “does not know the other defendants, has never met any of them, and was neither questioned about them nor were they questioned about her.” Nevertheless, she was listed as the primary defendant among eleven individuals with whom she has no known connection.

Badawy also noted that the court did not permit him to speak with his wife, allowing only a brief greeting from a distance. “They only allowed a quick wave from afar,” he said, adding, “We place our trust in God. We have no control over the matter.” He concluded, “God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”

In this context, the Justice for Human Rights Foundation strongly condemns the continued detention of lawyer Huda Abdel Moneim despite her deteriorating health condition. The foundation considers this a blatant violation of human rights and the fundamental legal guarantees afforded to detainees. It calls for her immediate and unconditional release and holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for her physical and psychological wellbeing. The foundation affirms that her continued detention reflects a deliberate disregard for humanitarian and human rights appeals.
