” Hoda Abdelmonem Faces New Sham Trial After Completing Prison Term”

The Cairo Court of Appeals set May 14, 2025, for the first session of the trial of human rights lawyer Hoda Abdelmonem and others before the Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court, in case No. 730 of 2020, Supreme State Security.

This trial comes after Ms. Abdelmonem completed a five-year prison sentence on October 31, 2023, in relation to case No. 1552 of 2018, Supreme State Security. She was charged with “joining a banned group” and “financing terrorism”—charges that JHR considers “fabricated and politically motivated.”

Despite completing her sentence, Ms. Abdelmonem was not released but was “recycled” into a new case, No. 800 of 2020. No date has yet been set for hearings in this case, continuing the pattern of prolonged and systematic pretrial detention.

In the new case, Ms. Abdelmonem faces the same charges as before, repeating a pattern that uses “recycling” as a tool to obstruct the release of human rights activists.

In this context, JHR expresses its deep concern about the continued deterioration of Ms. Abdelmonem’s health, demanding her immediate release and an end to the policy of judicial “recycling” that targets those who express their opinions and defend human rights.
