Stop Death Penalty Campaign’s Statement

In a complete secrecy accompanied by deafening silence, the news of executing three citizens in Egypt, were detained for different cases, has been leaked. The Egyptian authorities haven’t announced these executions, yet.

The three citizens;

1- Abd El-Rahman Abd El-Raheem,

2- Mohamed Gamal Mostafa Hendawy,

3- Ibrahim Ismail, who has 4 death sentences in different cases in the same time,

were sentenced to death, like most of other political cases, after unfair trials, headed by exceptional courts, with arbitrary and summary procedures, before the military courts and the emergency state security courts, and their judgments cannot be appealed against before the Cassation Court, which also refused to investigate the enforced disappearance and torture they were subjected to. Investigation into the claimed torture was rejected by the various prosecution offices, and was also rejected before the courts that heard their cases, in addition to not responding to the defense requests for their clients.

The Campaign and the signatory organizations – confirm their rejection of the death penalty for ot wastes the right to life in general, and for the misusing of it by the Egyptian authorities in particular.

As collective death sentences have been issued against citizens who were arbitrary arrested, forcibly disappeared, tortured and coerced into confessing against themselves. During the past 6 years, 1510 death sentences were handed down, 55 citizens were executed and their right to life was wasted without a fair trial.

At the same time, there are 82 Egyptian citizens in death row in the Egyptian prisons, who may be executed at any time.

It’s no longer a secret what the Egyptian authorities do regarding a specific type of cases, in which the defendants are deprived of being tried before their natural judge – increasing the trials of civilians before the military courts, or before the exceptional circuits and emergency state security courts.

The signatories of the statement call on the following:

– Halting all the 82 final and enforceable death sentences.

-Stop referring political cases to the exceptional courts.

-Stop trying civilians before the military court.
